1891 RC parishioners

I made a fortunate discovery recently. In January of 1891 the Colonist published the list of parishioners for Little Bay’s Catholic Church. This was in response to Father O’Flynn thanking them for the gift of a new horse.  This was a fortunate find in a couple of ways. The first concerns demographic information as there was a census in 1891 as well. So now we have a parishioners list giving us a total number of 200 and a census putting the total number of Catholics at 1104. To account for the difference I had a hunch. My hunch was that the difference could be explained if the 200 represented the adult members of the congregation. To test this I compared a few numbers in Canada, Britain, and the US for the time. I was curious about avg household size, birth rate, and infant mortality rate. What I found was an avg number people per household of roughly 6.5 which would mean 4.5 children per couple. This added up perfectly for the RC info I now had for Little Bay – if we assume 200 adults overseeing 900 kids. It’s a small sample but because its representative of the larger trend I should be able to apply the same process in reverse to figure out roughly how many people I’ve yet to find in the other denominations.

The other reason this is a terrific find has to do with my method. I generally start work on a family by making a timeline and having another list of names dated will aid that process greatly. Below you’ll find the parishioners list. I’ve typed them out as I  found them and haven’t done anything to reorganize them yet but I did hyperlinked the names I’ve posted on previously.

I’m a little busy as I’ve been asked to consult on another academic publication and I’ve got an upcoming appearance to do on an episode of Heritage Hunters. I will aim to incorporate this new information as soon as I find a free second. In the meantime here’s the list:
