Yates

I have very few references placing the Yates family in Little Bay. In 1882 Frank Yates is found living in Little Bay at Indian Bight. I’m inclined to think this is Francis Daniel Yates (1832-1891) for a couple of reasons. His Daughter Elizabeth Yates is living in Little Bay when she marries Peter Parsons there in 1888. Francis Yates is found living in Wild Bight by 1889. Wild Bight is modern day Beachside and some distance from Little Bay, Bight. However, the 1889 and 1893 voter lists categorize it as part of Little Bay proper which adds some confusion. Francis Yates died at Wild Bight in 1891 but his son Ananias Yates (1866-1942) is found living there afterward on the 1893 elector’s list.

The picture I’ve included is of Ananias Yates on the basis that he would have living in town if his father did in 1882 as he would have been 14 years old. If his father was in town for mining work there’s a good chance his son was working on the surface as a picker. However, this all goes out the window if it later turns out that Frank Yates and Francis Daniel Yates were different people.
