Boyles

Benjamin T. Boyles (pictured with his wife Jemima) moved to Shoal Arm, Little Bay from St. John’s with his sister Martha in 1878. Benjamin Boyles worked as a general dealer there. There were other Boyles present in the area including William G. Boyles at Tilt Cove in 1882 and a teamster named Henry Boyles at Little Bay by 1892. The Boyles family intertwined with the Benson family in 1885 as Johnathan Benson was also a dealer from St. John’s who lived in Little Bay at the time.

1878 – Mr. B. T. Boyles moved to Shoal Arm, Little Bay from St. John’s (Boyles)

1880 – Jemima Benson converted to the Methodist church and took an interest in the Shoal Arm services where she would go on to lead the singing (Boyles)

1885 – Johnathan Benson married Martha Boyles that September. His wife Sarah Jane had died the previous December. G.B. Reddin and Annie Benson witnessed (Civ marriages)

1885 – Johnathan’s daughter Jemima Benson married Benjamin Boyles that October. William Moores and Annie Benson witnessed (Civ marriages)

1887 – Birth of Joseph Boyles to Benjamin and Jamima (1911 Census)

1887 – Mr. Boyles travelled to Twillingate on the S.S. Kite (TS, June 18, 1887)

1888 – Mr. Boyles was a pall bearer at the funeral of Mrs. Deim (TS, Jan 21, 1888)

1889 – Mr. B. Boyles travelled to Twillingate on the S.S. Conscript (TS, Dec 7, 1889)

1890 – B.T. Boyles was on the committee for the Little Bay Rifle Club when they presented an address to the departing E.R. Burgess (ET, Jan 7, 1890)

1890 – Mr. Burgess presented a request for funding for a new public wharf which was signed by B. T. Bayles who lived two miles from the existing public wharf and needed a landing place nearer to his place of business (ET, April 28, 1890 / SJC, April 30, 1890 / HGS, May 23, 1890 / TS, June 7, 1890)

1890 – B.T. Boyles was a member of Little Bay’s Masonic Lodge (TS, Sept 27, 1890)

1892 – Clement Henry Boyles was born to Henry Thomas (teamster) and Mary Ann (Civ births)

1893 – Birth of Annie Boyles to Benjamin and Jamima (1911 Census)

1895 – Birth of Arthur Boyles to Benjamin and Jamima (1911 Census)

1895 – Benjamin T. Boyles signed the requisition to sir Robert Bond

1895 – Arthur Henry Boyles born to Benjamin Thomas and Jemima (Civ births)

1897 – Birth of Victor Boyles to Benjamin and Jamima (1911 Census)

1897 – B.T. Boyles listed as a general dealer at Little Bay Point (Devine and O’Mara)

1898 – Benjamin Boyles listed as general dealer at Shoal Arm (McAlpine)

1908 – Birth of Frank Boyles to Benjamin and Jamima (1911 Census)

1911 – Benjamin and Jamima Boyles live in Little Bay with their children (Census)

1911 – Benjamin Boyles was the lay reader at the death of George Sheppard

1914 – Joseph completed his ministry studies in New Brunswick where he had been accepted along with his brother Arthur (Boyles)

1914 – Death of Joseph George Boyles son of Benjamin and Jemima (Headstone)

1925 – Arthur Boyles was ordained in St. John’s and moved to Springdale where he served for two years (Boyles)

1926 – The Boyles family moved to Springdale that January (Boyles)

1935 – Frank Boyles married Nellie Short. He worked in the area as a dogsled mail carrier, taxi operator, and dairy man.

1940 – Death of Jemima Churchill Benson Boyles in Springdale age 74

1941 – Death of Benjamin T. Boyles in Springdale age 85

1980 – Frank Boyles finished his book on the history of Springdale’s Grace United Church

1982 – Frank Boyles was honoured as citizen of the year in Springdale after many years of volunteer community service there.
