Hacker

Franz Hacker (1851-1895) was born in Dresdan. He was the civil engineer in charge of the machinist department in Little Bay. He was with the mining company from 1878 until his departure in 1887. It is likely that he followed Baron Ellershausen to Newfoundland from Nova Scotia after rescue from a shipwreck in 1863. According to Bassler “it may be assumed that some of Ellershausen’s thirty of so German miners stayed in Newfoundland after he had returned to Europe” (Bassler). The Hackers appear to be the last German family to leave Little Bay. They left Newfoundland for Germany in 1887. Franz Hacker married Sarah Duder in 1880. Sarah died in Germany in 1894 and Franz died there the following year – victims of consumption.
