Sculley

Someone asked me to compile my references for the last name Sully but when I looked into it I only had one reference to a Mr. W.T. Sully in the RC school reports. I found a handful of references to a Mr. W.T. Sculley in the newspapers and realized that was his actual last name. William Walsh (1880-1948) had mentioned being educated at Little Bay by Dr. Scully. That title made more sense once I found reference to a medical student named W.T. Sculley travelling from St. John’s to New York in 1894 on a passenger list. On it he had listed his hometown as Harbour Grace. This lined up with his travelling back and forth from Little Bay to Harbour Grace during his stay. Further, there was another teacher named Michael Scully working in Harbour Grace around the same time period so I’d guess they were related. The passenger list also gave me a date-of-birth of 1871. I don’t have many references to this gentleman but I found enough to flush out the following:

W.T. Sculley was born in Harbour Grace in 1871. He moved to Little Bay in 1889 when he was 18 years old to take over teaching 75 Catholic students from the exiting Mr. Hanrahan. During Mr. Sculley’s time in Little Bay he took several trips home to Harbour Grace by steamer. Besides his duties as an educator he enjoyed shooting and was a committee member of the Little Bay Rifle Club. He remained in town until at least 1891. He left Newfoundland for New York in 1894 at the age of 23 to continue his medical training and arrived at Ellis Island on the S.S. Silva.
